What criteria would a buyer use to determine which shares are among the best for investing in? Some people buy shares just for the sake of yearly dividends that they get, infact most Nigerians prefer that but the true value of a company should not be in just how much dividends they pay.

Other things to be considered include:
- Long term debts
- Capital appreciation
- Market value
- Earnings
- Assets

As an investor, it could be helpful to you if you get access to the company's online portfolio and look at historical and current market values so as to make the right decisions between say, company A and B and
deciding which one to buy rather than the other.

When to buy shares
The best times to buy shares are when the prices are low or undervalued. Now, in Nigeria, after the stock market crash, a couple of stocks are still undervalued and others are actually at their true values since they didn't do too good.

If the market report is good and the company has been doing well, but it's price is still undervalued, then it's a good buy. It is also good to buy shares during a time of inflation especially in companies related to consumer goods so as to hedge against inflation.

So which shares are best to buy?
If I was asked to buy shares, my personal opinion will be to buy shares of companies that are still safe and moderately priced such as the following:

- UBA
- Fidelity bank
- First bank
- Sterling bank
- Diamond bank
- Unity Bank
- Dangote Sugar
- Honeywell
- May and Baker
- Cornerstone insurance

So before buying any shares in Nigeria, try to research a bit on them, if possible, get their company report and find news reports about them for the past 3 years.

Conclusion
The best price to buy shares of a company is when it is as about N0.50 since that is their least value no matter what. The closer you are to buying from 0.50, the higher your chances of making profit when it appreciates.

I don't know anything on shares and i need to invest now

Re: Best Shares to buy in Nigeria Reply by Felix Okoli on Tuesday October 16, 2012 at 9:31:45:

Just decide on which share you want to buy and the share price, decide on how many units you want and then meet a stockbroker to buy it. You would just pay a small commission based on the value of your transaction.

how can i know am investing in the right place

Re: Best Shares to buy in Nigeria Reply by Felix Okoli on Monday November 26, 2012 at 10:25:48:

You can first of all analyze the stock's future by reading news and knowing what's happening to the company. One easy way to analyze your stock is by Googling about the company on the internet. You can also read their financial reports to see if there are any new forms of business they've invested into and see their pas performance. At times, it may just be a low price that could be good enough for profit.

I bought some unit of shares from one of the major banks in Nigeria, now I am not happy that I did. Not only because of the ill-fated market. Is it wise if I decide to sale at the present market conditions

Re: Best Shares to buy in Nigeria Reply by Felix Okoli on Monday January 7, 2013 at 4:12:56:

It is better to buy now than sell. Just keep a record of how much you bought those ones that have now lost value and make that price your selling point. If you have more capital now, this is a good time to buy more shares. Selling is not smart now.

Logically, you've lost N2 already. Chances are that you can make it back if that share later appreciates

Re: Best Shares to buy in Nigeria Reply by Felix Okoli on Wednesday April 24, 2013 at 12:11:58:

As I said, you can buy shares from the secondary market, when they are not publicly sold by simply meeting with a stock brokerage company. You should checkout the NSE website for a list of registered brokers and their offices

I want to invest, so if I'm investing in a bank...... Is it a must I've an account with them. Do you need certificates to buy shares and how do the profit come in when you've bought the shares.

Re: Best Shares to buy in Nigeria Reply by Felix Okol on Tuesday May 28, 2013 at 10:9:43:

You don't need to have a bank account with them before buying their shares. You just have to have you cash or cheque and then meet with a stockbroker to make a buy order.
You don't need certificate to buy shares but you would get a receipt when you make payment and then get a certificate or proof of ownership later on when your purchased it. The profit comes when that share appreciates in price e.g. from N5 to N6.

Pls with how much do i need to start buying shares @ least and is this the right time to buy ?

Re: Best Shares to buy in Nigeria Reply by Felix Okoli on Friday June 7, 2013 at 9:45:51:

You can start buying shares with even N10,000. As for the right time, I can't really say but I tend to prefer buying around November and selling by March.

Re: Best Shares to buy in Nigeria Reply by Felix Okoli on Tuesday January 21, 2014 at 11:38:54:

I'm not sure most brokers would even want to buy shares from you with N2000. Maybe you should wait for a public offer when available

Re: Best Shares to buy in Nigeria Reply by Felix Okoli on Friday January 30, 2015 at 22:16:25:

Ofcourse you can buy shares of N2m but there is no guarantee of earnings. If the company makes profit, then you will make some profit. The issue lies in buying the right shares.

I wish to buy share from dangote sugar. Can i start wit #10000 . How would i begin. Pls help me.

Re: Best Shares to buy in Nigeria Reply by Felix Okoli on Sunday March 8, 2015 at 14:29:59:

Yes you can buy shares with as little as N10,000. Dangote Sugar is priced at around N6.67. To buy it, just meet with a stockbroking firm and apply for share purchase. They normally charge a small fee of about 3 to 4% for the service. You can buy over 1000 units with your capital.
