In a nation on a hot climate like Africa's, something should tell you that ice sells in places like this. In the north pole and countries close there, they normally need to pay for heating their homes but in Nigeria, having a huge population in Africa, one of the things that sells well is cooling. As long as our climate remains the way it is, people would always be willing to pay for cooling.

There are a lot of things that makes cooling or cold products sell well in Nigeria and these includes:
- The weather
- High level of Manual labour
- Inefficient power supply
- Poor road network
- Low taxation
- High market population
- Partying lifestyle

I don't want to go into explaining all of the above but let me just touch the issue of inefficient power supply. Imagine living in a country that is hot and still not be able to go home or office and at least cool your self just because of no power. Now people like these who are a lot in the country particularly in urban places are more than willing to buy cold drinks or iced blocks to cool their temperature. Producing and selling iced blocks can help satisfy the needs of these customers. Even in the transport sector, there are a lot of cold drink hawkers who make millions just selling to thirsty and exhausted motorists. People need to drink cold drinks just to cool off and prevent health problems. So there are always a lot of people drinking cold stuff daily just to make it through their jobs. So this like the weather, poor infrastructure are already helping to promote the consumption of cold drinks.

People who do parties occasionally are also in need of cooling. Parties are common in Nigeria such as for naming ceremony, weddings, birthdays, school parties, clubs and so on and there would need to get the instant effect of cooling which normal fridges don't usually give. So cooling business doesn't seem to be in a hurry to go and you can make millions from just selling iced blocks.

How much do Iced blocks cost?
I've seen people selling ice blocks at about N50 to N150 per unit and that is almost about a $1 and that is just on a normal basis. Now when there is any national disruption of public services like strike, fuel scarcity, blackouts or even the removal of fuel subsidy, iced blocks can rise to about N200 per unit and that's about $1.5
Now imagine if you were able to produce up to at least 10 units of iced blocks everyday, you could be making 1500 a day and one freezer could be producing that for you. There are others who use commercial ice block machines to produce more but I think it almost the same thing if you would use more freezers. So the maths is simple. If one freezer gives you N1500 a day, you can get N15,000 a day if you have ten freezers.

What do you need to start Ice blocks business
- Space
- Freezing machines - Ordinary freezers or ice block machines are ok
- Packaging nylon
- Water supply
- Labour: 1 0r 2
- Record keeping for daily sales and expenses
- Your target market
- Decide on your price

Other things you need to do
- Pay your tax when you make income.
- Decide on storage. The larger your storage, the more your potential turnover. Most ice block makes don't always meet demand.

How long does it take for ice blocks to form?
Normally it may take over a day and depends on your freezing machine and how new or old it is. Newer freezers form iced blocks faster. It may take 2 to 3 days on the start and as long as there is light but as it gains momentum, it starts producing ices blocks on a daily basis and that it money for you.

Ice block machines vary in sizes and cost. You can see some for N200k and some for N600k. You can also use a normal freezer(Upright or chest) to make iced blocks. Ice block machines can use a normal generator as long as generator's output is enough for the ice machine's power.
