What are directories? They are simply guides or listings of things in such a way as to help people find what they are looking for. For instance, the Jamb brochure which students use to plan their university applications is a form of directory. A book having a listing of schools or hospitals in a location with their addresses and contacts is a directory. However in this case I'm talking about making money from online or internet directories.

Online directories are the type that can be accessed by people on the internet and you can make money by building or setting them up for profit.

There are 3 ways I know you can make money from online directories in Nigeria:
- By using Google adsense (online advertising)
- By getting paid for listings
- By offering subscription based service to end users

In Nigeria, what I've noticed is that almost lack of information that can satisfy the public. People need directories for things like:
Hotels, eateries, government institutions, places to go, schools, universities, bus stops, shopping plazas, roads and routes and so on. If you can provide these things to people on the internet, you can really make a lot of money from it.
There is an example of a directory site I built about academic institutions and it really has to much traffic that I can hardly have time to work on it. It is not yet bring money as it ought to but I am planning on expanding on it 3 fold.

Now if you don't now how to setup online directories, you can get a web designer do it for you or get a free script online. You can even make extra money when you convert your online directory into a book and sell it to people and if you still don't have the funds to publish your book, you can publish it for almost free with companies like Amazon.com and get royalty payments.
